Plaza de La Aduana

Plaza de La Aduana 1

Plaza de la Aduana is south of Alfiz Hotel and the Plaza we walked through to reach Plaza de los Coches from our hotel.  It is only 300 meters from the clocktower and the two plazas almost merge as one.

Plaza de la Aduana is a large paved plaza and was originally used as a parade ground.  It housed the Customs House, where all goods coming into port were inspected.  It is also known as Custom’s Square.  Today it is the City Hall.  Pedro de Heredia lived there before the building became a customs house, so it seems to me that this plaza would be better place for his statue than where it is in Plaza de los Coches

Statue Christopher Columbus

Plaze de la Aduana has a statue of Christopher Columbus and next to him is a statue of an indigenous woman, which seems a little inappropriate given that these are the people he conquered in the name of Spain!  The Christopher Columbus statue was erected at the end of the 19th century and is a replica of a statue in Genoa, Italy.

Plaza de La Aduana 2

Apparently, Plaza de la Aduana is often converted into an open-air concert venue and hosts several large city events.
